Biggest mistake people make when traveling to Puerto Rico

Not exploring outside of San Juan! That’s the biggest mistake people make when they venture to Puerto Rico.

Outside of San Juan’s city limits is an entirely different culture to absorb. Puerto Rico is considered a Caribbean escape, decorated from edge to edge with beautiful, lush beaches. But there is more than the beach.

In the center of the island are rolling hills and mountains populated with small, windy roads. There’s even a rainforest in the eastern part of the country, which is home to dozens of cool, relaxing waterfalls. Cave systems also weave throughout the island and are a spelunker’s hidden dream.

Does that sound up your alley?

If you’d like your excursions to go outside the perimeter of San Juan, rent a car! That’s the biggest piece of advice I can give you. In San Juan public transportation and Uber is reliable, but to visit El Yunque Rainforest and other natural wonders around the island, book a rental car.

Driving in Puerto Rico is relatively easy. Locals drive on the right side of the road, like the United States. Most signage is in Spanish, but the symbols and overall shape of the signs are similar to signs in the United States. Closer to San Juan and other popular hot spots, some signs are in English.

Ask the locals their favorite hangouts and I guarantee they’ll recommend hidden gems beyond the outskirts of San Juan. To get the entire Puerto Rico experience, explore the entire island.

In February I took a two-week-long road trip in Puerto Rico and it was one of the best experiences of my life! It definitely wasn’t a mistake.
